Kansas Community HealthCorps

KAMU sponsors an AmeriCorps program, the Kansas Community Health Corps (KCHC), which places AmeriCorps members in primary care safety net clinics throughout the state. The goals of the program are to increase access to health care, reduce health disparities among underserved populations, and create a strong healthcare workforce that is sensitive to the needs of the medically underserved.

KCHC members perform health outreach and education, act as case managers and advocates for patients, and develop and support volunteer recruitment and retention within their health clinic site. They work in targeted service areas that include diabetes, oral health, maternal-child health, and HPV awareness.

While serving their clinic and community, AmeriCorps members develop expertise along with professional and leadership skills. Recruitment is not limited to people seeking future careers in health care, but membership in the Kansas Community HealthCorps is an excellent way to begin a career in the health services.

For the 2008-2009 program years, members are placed in Kansas City, Lawrence, Emporia, Pittsburg, Wamego and Wichita.
